چکیده

Mathematical models for co-infection of diseases (that is, the simultaneous infection of an individual by multiple diseases) are sorely lacking in the literature. Here we present a mathematical model for the co-infection of malaria and schistosomiasis. We derive reproduction numbers for malaria and schistosomiasis independently, then combine these to determine the effects of disease interactions. Sensitivity indices show that malaria infection may be associated with an increased rate of schistosomiasis infection. However, schistosomiasis infection is not associated with an increased rate of malaria infection. Therefore, whenever there is co-infection of malaria and schistosomiasis in the community, our model suggests that control measures for each disease should be administered concurrently for effective control.

Plasmodium falciparum and Schistosoma mansoni coinfection and the side benefit of artemether-lumefantrine in malaria patients.

INTRODUCTION The distribution of both malaria and schistosomiasis exhibits a large geographical overlap in tropical environments, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This part of the world currently harbours more than 85% of the estimated global burden of these diseases. Studies showed that artemisinin derivatives used for the treatment of malaria also have an antischistosomal effect. This stud...

Stability and Numerical Analysis of Malaria- mTB- HIV/AIDS Co-infection (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this paper, we develop a mathematical model to examine the transmission dynamics of curable malaria, curable mTB and non-curable HIV/AIDS and their co-infection. The size of population has been taken as varying due to the emigration of susceptible population. The total population is divided into five subclasses as susceptible, malaria infected, mTB infected, HIV infection and AIDS by assumin...

Co-infection of Long-Term Carriers of Plasmodium falciparum with Schistosoma haematobium Enhances Protection from Febrile Malaria: A Prospective Cohort Study in Mali

BACKGROUND Malaria and schistosomiasis often overlap in tropical and subtropical countries and impose tremendous disease burdens; however, the extent to which schistosomiasis modifies the risk of febrile malaria remains unclear. METHODS We evaluated the effect of baseline S. haematobium mono-infection, baseline P. falciparum mono-infection, and co-infection with both parasites on the risk of ...

Impact of Schistosoma mansoni on Malaria Transmission in Sub-Saharan Africa

BACKGROUND Sub-Saharan Africa harbors the majority of the global burden of malaria and schistosomiasis infections. The co-endemicity of these two tropical diseases has prompted investigation into the mechanisms of coinfection, particularly the competing immunological responses associated with each disease. Epidemiological studies have shown that infection with Schistosoma mansoni is associated ...

Impact of Schistosome Infection on Plasmodium falciparum Malariometric Indices and Immune Correlates in School Age Children in Burma Valley, Zimbabwe

A group of children aged 6-17 years was recruited and followed up for 12 months to study the impact of schistosome infection on malaria parasite prevalence, density, distribution and anemia. Levels of cytokines, malaria specific antibodies in plasma and parasite growth inhibition capacities were assessed. Baseline results suggested an increased prevalence of malaria parasites in children co-inf...
